Pastor’s Note

During November Catholic remember in a special way those who have gone before us to be with the Lord.  We remember their physical lives certainly, but we emphasize their spiritual lives.  In the midst of our loss and grief, we remember the promise made by our Lord Jesus Christ that he would raise up on the last day those who have been faithful disciples.

On Monday, November 2nd we will celebrate a Service of Light (a Liturgy of the Word rather than mass) for those who have died since last November.  In that service there will be a roll call of those who have died in the past year.  If you have loved ones who have died in this past year you would like to remember, please contact the parish office so that they can be included in this Service of Light.

Additionally, there will be a Book of Remembrance near the front of the church beginning next weekend in which you may record the names of all of your loved ones who have gone to be with the Lord.  This Book of Remembrance will remain near the altar through the month of November as a visual reminder of our privilege to pray for our deceased brothers and sisters.  The Book of Remembrance is for all those who are deceased; the Service of Light is focused on those who died during this past year.

RESPECT LIFE NEWS

40 Days for Life Update:

Day 20: Total of 219 babies' lives saved nationwide!

Please keep praying.

“Concerns about health care costs and general financial uncertainty, along with serious discussions about limiting health care for the elderly, are currently reaching the boiling point. If assisted suicide is added to the cauldron, the final result can be doubly lethal. Making assisted suicide a medical treatment gives it the status of only one among many options for the treatment of certain conditions. In cost-effectiveness assisted suicide differs in a major way from other treatments. It is extremely affordable and can always be covered by health insurance. The force of economic gravity can lead to increased pressure on patients to request, and doctors to prescribe, assisted suicide.”

– Rita Marker, “Assisted Suicide: Death by ‘Choice’?”, pamphlet from 2009 Respect Life Program.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

October 18, 2009      29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)

Gospel reading         Mark 10:42-45

Brief commentary:

Like all of us ordinary human beings, James and John seek glory for themselves when they ask Jesus for places at his right and left.  Jesus surprises them—and us—by responding that true glory comes only from a life lived and given for others. Sharing in Jesus’ glory demands drinking his cup of suffering, being baptized into his death, and becoming the slave of all.  Who would think that glory comes out of self-giving, suffering, and dying?  What a contradiction!  (Living Liturgy, Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2009

For our shared or personal reflection:

1. How do you seek to get the approval and praise of other people?

2.How do you respond when someone asks you to do something that is inconvenient, tedious, or something you would prefer not to do?
