Pastor’s Note
The nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside. “Your son is here,” she told the man in the bed. She had to repeat the words several times before the old man opened his eyes. The Marine wrapped his toughened hand around the old man’s, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.
All through the night the Marine sat, holding the old man’s hand. Near dawn, the old man died and the Marine called the nurse. As they stood by the bedside, the Marine asked, “Who was that man?” The nurse, startled, responded, “He was your father.” “No,” the Marine answered; I never saw that man before.” “Then why didn’t you say something?”
“I knew immediately there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son wasn’t there. I realized he was too sick to know whether or not I was his son, so knowing how much he needed me, I stayed.”
Our faith challenges us to recognize and respond to the basic needs of others. Remember: we are not human beings going through a temporary spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings going through a temporary human experience.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
July 13, 2008 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel reading: Matthew 13:1-9
On that
day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.
Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and
the whole crowd stood along the shore.
And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the
path, and birds came and ate it up. Some
fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the
sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced
fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”
Brief Commentary:
The parable in this Sunday’s gospel describes four different conditions under which the seed is sown—three of which thwart its growth. Nevertheless, an abundant harvest is guaranteed because it is God’s work and it cannot be thwarted. Despite present hardships, despite rejection and obstinacy, God’s kingdom will be established and Jesus’ mission will be accomplished—a hundredfold. Despite the conditions of where the seed falls, there is an abundant harvest.
--Living Liturgy, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2008

After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.

VOCATION VIEWS
