6. Andrew2 McCALLIE (ALEXANDER1) was born May 23, 1749 in Old Luce Parish, Scotland, and died January 22, 1842.
He married Martha TODD.
Notes for Andrew McCALLIE: The first place we can find Andrew is Fayette
County, Kentucky in the 1810 census. Fayette County is the county in which Lexington is located but Andrew was
a farmer in the southern part of the county. The census taker, Joseph
Crockett, described his census territory like this: " The number of persons within my division consisting
of the south part of Payette
County (that is to say) all south of the main road leading from Frankfort by Billy Dailey's to exclude Lexington,
then up the main
road leading to Clark Court House - containing 12,365 souls as appears in a schedule hereto subscribed by me this
29th day of
December 1810"
Crockett reported four children in the Andrew McCallie household. Two boys, one between 10 and 16 and one between
16 and 26, and the same for the girls. Andrew and his wife were both listed over 45 years old. There were no slaves
listed.
The community - or farm area - must have been primarily Scottish since many of the surrounding home were of Scottish
names as
heads of the household.
(Editor's Note: In the 1800 to 1850 national census only the heads of household were classified by sex and by age,
i.e., under 10, 10 to 16, 16-26, 26-45 and over 45. Negroes and Free Colored People (generally Indians) were listed
separately. )
Andrew married Martha Todd according to Mattie Davis of the Lexington, Kentucky DAR, and one son was named John
M.
McCallie, of whom she is a descendant. The other son was William T. McCallie who was born in 1788. some 13 years
after Andrew arrived in America.

Notes for JOHN McCALLIE: Emigrated to America abt 1775 & landed at Philadelphia, PA.
Lived for a few years near Hunterstown, PA where married Nancy Burney. Moved to the
mouth of the Chucky River in East Tennessee, then on to Blount & Sevier Counties. Note on
old family record states "This was sent in from Sam Pickens, Route 3, Maryville, Tennessee -
April 12, 1961".

Most of historical information was copied from an old record in the possession of Andrew
McCallie of the 4th generation. The rest is oral history given by him, written July 20, 1901.
One of John's brothers came with him to Philadelphia. Soon after arriving in Philadelphia, they
became separated and John never saw him again. He was under the impression that he left
Philadelphia and settled in the North West. The oral tradition is that a friend of the McCallie
family, who had occasion to travel the North West attended church in the section where

Notes for Jeremiah James "Jerry" JACK: When Jeremiah and Susannah left Missouri in 1847 on the Oregon
Trail, they were the oldest couple in the wagon party . He was 62 and she was 65. He died from the results of a
rattlesnake bite while hoeing corn in the fields on his donation land claim. At the Miller Pioneer Cemetery near
Silverton, Oregon, Susannah's headstone reads "Susannah consort of Jeremiah Jack" In the dictionary consort

Greenwood, Texas. W.J. was first shown on roll of Tunnel Hill Lodge No. 202 in 1868, and
was listed as the Junior Steward (officer of the Lodge) from 1869-1870. He left the lodge on
Dec 6, 1876. Copies of proceedings listing Mr. Hill as a member in 1869 ON FILE!
On June 3, 2001, while at the Annual Greenwood Reunion (held the 1st Sunday in June), I
visited the Masonic Lodge building in Greenwood and was given opportunity to look through

HEKR notes: William Jasper Hill MILITARY RECORDS indicate he first enlisted 29 April 1862
at Tunnel Hill, GA. He was wounded at Knoxville, TN Nov 28, 1863 and sent to Gen. Hospl
Nov 29, 1863. He was listed as 'absent with leave since Mar 31, 1864. Evidentally he was
discharged, as his next papers show he enlisted 1 May 1864, Dalton, GA. He was
recommended for 3rd Lieut. of Co. A, in GA. Cav, 15 Nov 1864. The appointment was
approved. (J.C. Kingsley {bro to HEKR} has a large picture of him, taken in his Officer's
uniform.) His widow, Hettie Ann Hill, applied for a Widow's Pension, Austin, TX, 1 May 1925,
approved 17 May, retroactive to 1 Mar 1926, #42077. They were notified of her death, 13

BLEDSOE COUNTY, TENNESSEE IN THE CIVIL WAR
This time period created much confusion and dissension among the citizens. Bledsoe County
voted against withdrawal from the Union and while the state itself voted for secession, much of
the eastern part of Tennessee remained loyal to the Union.
Despite the fact that Bledsoe voted against secession, several Confederate companies were
organized. The Tulloss Rangers were organized by John Bridgeman in July 1861 and
named to honor James A. Tulloss of Pikeville for his contributions to the company. In August,
1861, Weatherston S. Greer also organized a company with men from Bledsoe, Rhea and
Roane Counties. Other Confederate units were organized by William J. Hill, Alexander H.
Roberson and Oliver P. Schoolfield.

John Shahan enlisted in Civil War, 20 Sept. 1862, Co. A, 4th Reg. of GA
CAv., Dalton GA. During the Battle of Atlanta, he became critically ill with the fever and was left
behind, where he was taken prisioner. He was so ill as to be unable to be sent to prison and
was parolled into the hands of his widowed mothr, His war record showed he had deserted,
but he was never aware of this until he applied for a pension in 1910. Much correspondence
was entailed , but he did clear his name and did receive a pension in 1914. One of the
affidavits, in his behalf was written by his sister, Mrs. Mary J. Sims, Walker Co. GA. (exhibit
CC/PLT) His brother , J.A. Shahan , Walker Co. GA also gave a deposition.
In 1884, John Shahan, in Birmingham, AL wrote to his sister, Hettie Ann Hill, at Greenwood,
TX, telling of the hardships of his family and work..
He'd been to GA in Sept. to see his baby daughter who was being reared by his wife's
relations. Said the only property he owned was a half interest in a mill, 8 miles from the city.
Willie was attending a commercial school, James is in the restaurant business. We have a nice
room upstairs in a brick building. The boys keep our room cleaned up very nice. James
boards where stays. Me and Will is boarding. We are rite lonesom for the children but it seems
the best we can do Have my business in good shape but made no money this last year as I
have had so much bad luck.... I remain your brother. J. Shahan

W. T. McCallie Found Lying In His Own Blood.
Lula Lake Resident Barricades Himself in Tenant House - Blood Leads to Body.
Missing her husband, who had been absent from his home since an early hour, Mrs. W. T.
mcCVallie, of near Lulu Lake, started in search of him a little after noon yesterday. Mrs.
McVallie's search of the fields and woods near the home proved fruitless. She finally came
upon a small tenant house on the place and upon approaching was shocked to see little
streams of what appeared to ne blood trickling from under the door. All efforts to effect an
entrance to the house were futile, as all doors and windows were securely locked.
Mrs. McCallie, upon being convinced that she could not alone force an entrance, at once
returned to the house for help. Several neighbors volunteered to return to the house with her,
carrying axes and bars with which to force the doors.
Mrs. McCalllie entered the house leading the party, to discover the dead body of her husband
on the floor with a deep gash in his throat from a razor which he held in his hand.
Mr. McCallie has for several years been in the habit of wandering off by himself in the country
adjacent to his home, and his absence did not at first cause alarm, no fear being felt that he
would take his own life. It was said that his mind had been affected for some time, however.
An inquest was held late in the afternoon by the Walker county coroner and a verdict of
suicide handed down.
Mr. McCallie was 68 years old. He leaves besides his widow one son, Ed, of St. Elmo, and
one daughter, Mrs. Ida Masey, of Hinkle, Ga. Mr. McCallie, so far as could be learned last
night, was in no way related to the well-known McCallie family of this city. The funeral will be
held this afternoon at 2 in the Haynes chapel, in Hinkle, Ga. The Rev. Bartow McFarland will
officiate."
